Claritin or loratadine is an antihistamine which influence on the natural chemical histamine in the body by decreasing the effects. Histamine is responsible for producing the allergic symptoms like watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose and itching. So Claritin is the best option to treat such symptoms of seasonal allergy. This medication is also used for the management of itching and skin bumps in the patient who is facing chronic skin reaction. This drug should be avoided in the patient who is allergic to Loratidine. Claritin 10mg is taken by oral administration. This drug is also available in the form of liquid for paediatric use.

Mechanism of action of Claritin 10mg:

Claritin or Loratadine works by competing with the free histamine for the receptors and exhibits the following activities:

  • It inhibits the function of endogenous histamine which causes temporary relief of the symptoms.
  • Claritin exhibits alpha-adrenergic blocking activity.
  • This medication also has an ability to suppress the secretion of histamine as well as leukotrines from the mast cells in animal and humane. But the clinical importance of this action is still not known.

Indications of Claritin 10mg:

Claritin 10 is indicated in the following treatments:

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis.
  • Pruritis, urticarial and erythema associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Contraindications associated to Claritin:

To be in the safer side, always take your doctor’s advice before taking this medication. Your doctor only can decide whether you are fit to take this medication or not. However, some of the contraindications are:

  • If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medication.
  • This medication can secrete in the breast milk. So do not use Claritin if you are breast feeding.
  • This medication is strictly contraindicated in the children below the age of 6 years.
  • Claritin should be avoided in the patients of kidney and liver disease. If you need to use, you must talk to your doctor before taking the dose.

Drug interactions of this Claritin:

There are other medications that may interact with Claritin. So, to avoid the complications, you should inform your physician if you are under any other drugs. It is not possible to mention all the drugs name here, however some of the common drug interactions of Claritin are mentioned below:

Method of taking Claritin:

You should always take Claritin as per your doctor’s prescription or the instructions written on the label. Do not alter the dose less or more than the prescription. The recommended dose of this medication is once daily. Swallow the whole tablet of Claritin. Do not chew or crush the medicine. Do not remove the pill from the blister pack until you take the medicine. Make sure that your hand is dry while removing the tablets and place it on the tongue. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth completely and then swallow. If you want, you can drink water also to swallow the dissolved medication.

Storage of the medication:

Always store Claritin between the temperatures of 2-30 degree C. Protect the medicine form heat and light. Do not freeze the medication. Keep the medication out of the reach of the children and pets.

In case of missed dose:

If you miss a dose, take the medication once you remember it. But do not take the missed dose at the time of the next dose schedule.

If you take an overdose:

You should always take care about your dosage. Do not try to take an excessive dose of this medication, because it can increase the chance of some symptoms like headache, tachycardia or increased heart rate and drowsiness.

Precautions associated to Claritin 10mg:
