Generic Advair Diskus is an effective medicine that is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that is seen during chronic bronchitis. The patient can feel the effect of this medicine within 30-60 minutes after using it. The effect of this medicine remains for more than 12 hours.  However, this medicine should not be shared with other person showing similar symptoms as that of the user of this medicine.

Generic Advair Diskus contains two medicine; namely fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate.  

Fluticasone propionate and salmeterol xinafoate acts simultaneously on the airways in the respiratory diseases. Salmeterol xinafoate reduces the inflammation of the airways and Fluticasone propionate reduces the spasms of the muscle cells of the airways.

Generic Advair Diskus should be stored at room temperature. It should be protected from light, moisture and heat. The medicine should be kept away from the reach of child and pet. The patient should not remove the device from its original packing until ready to use. The user should discard the device after one month of its removal from the original foil packing.

Generic Advair Diskus got approval from FDA in June 2006. 

Mechanism of action: 

Generic Advair Diskus is an effective inhaled medicine that is used in the treatment of asthma and chronic bronchitis.

Bronchioles are small airsac and are the most important parts of the lung. Through the bronchioles, air passes in and out of your lungs. In asthmatic patient, these bronchioles become narrowed due to accumulation of mucus. Due to this, swelling in the lining of the airways occurs. Because of problem, the patient might suffer from wheezing, cough, congestion and shortness of breath.

Being beta-2-agonist, this medicine gets attach to the beta-2 receptors that are present on the smooth muscle cells that surrounds the airways. This in turn results in relaxation of muscle cells and airways gets open.

 

Indication: 

Generic Advair Diskus is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that occurs due to chronic bronchitis.

 

Side effects: 

Some of the side effects of generic Advair Diskus that the patient might experience are: 

  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Throat or mouth candidiasis
  • Musculoskeletal pain 

 

Drug interactions:

Some of the drugs that might interact with generic Advair Diskus are: 

  • Amitriptyline
  • Ritonavir
  • Atazanavir
  • Clarithromycin
  • Indinavir
  • Itraconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Nelfinavir
  • Telithromycin

 

 Dosage:

  • For treating individual of age group 12 years and above- 500/50 mcg, twice in a day, with an interval of 12 hours.
  • For treating individuals of age group 4-11 years- 100/50 mcg, twice in a day.
  • To treat patient with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease – 250/50 mcg, twice in day

 

Missed dose: 

In case, the patient misses their dose, they should skip it and take the regular scheduled dose. In any case, double dose of the medicine is not advisable for making up the missed one.

 

Overdose: 

In case of overdose of the medicine, the patient should contact their medical advisor. Some of the symptoms of overdose are shaking, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, seizure, etc.

 

Precautions: 

  • Before taking this medicine, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to it or any ingredients of the medicine.
  • In case the patient has any medical history of any infection, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, cataract, glaucoma, liver disease, seizure, etc. then they should tell to the doctor before starting treatment with this medicine.
  • If the patient is taking any prescribed drug, non-prescribed drugs and herbal products, then they should tell to the doctor prior treatment with this medicine.
  • Nursing mother and pregnant patient should consult to the doctor and discuss the risk and benefit of using this medicine.
