Anti Fibrotic

Anti-fibrotic drugs are extensively used to reduce fibrosis in an organ. Fibrosis is a process of synthesis of fibrous connective tissues like collagen in large amount in an organ in repairing process to heal a wound. It generally occurs at the site where tissues are damaged.

In the normal process, wound is healed by the deposition of connective tissues and results in a scar. During abnormal process, the formation of fibrous connective tissue takes place in an uncontrolled manner. The fibrosis process cause hardened tissues or benign scar.  This benign scar or hardened tissue is treated with the anti- fibrotic agent.

Fibrosis is caused by the intermediary agent called transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta). This substance is secreted from macrophages and from damaged tissues. TGF beta stimulates the growth and establishes the activation of fibroblast. Fibroblast is a cell from which connective tissues grow. This thereby, results in deposition of connective tissues on the swollen or damaged organ.

Uses of Anti-Fibrotic agents:

Anti-fibrosis treatment is meant for those patients who experience the problem of the fibrosis of the lungs (Pulmonary Fibrosis, Cystic Fibrosis, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis), Liver Cirrhosis, heart (Atrial Fibrosis) and other body parts such as skin (Scleroderma) , intestine (Crohn’s Disease), bone marrow (Myelofibrosis), joints Arthrofibrosis, shoulder, hands, penis (Peyronie's Disease), etc.

Working of anti-fibrotic agents:

Anti- fibrotic agent reduces the proliferation of fibroblast and promotes inhibition of TGF-β and this reduces fibrosis.
