Generic Astelin nasal spray belongs to the class of medicine known as antihistamine. It blocks the action of histamine (a chemical responsible for allergic reaction). This medicine is  used as nasal inhaler and is known to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis, runny nose, sneezing, nasal itching, etc. The medicine can be used for individual of age group 12 years and above.

Generic Astelin or Azelastine is known to belong to the second generation, histamine antagonist. This is used to treat moderate/severe intermittent and mild persistent rhinitis. The generic medicine is used as nasal spray and contains 0.1% and 0.15% solutions and when used as eye drops, contains 0.05% solution. This medicine is formulated at different locations. It is available under different trade names such as MedaPharma, Allergodil in mainland Europe, Rhinolast in UK, Astelin/Astepro in US, Azepin in Australia and Lastin in Finland. Furthermore, generic Astelin is manufactured as eye drop in Optilast in UK and Optivar in USA. The medicine got approval from FDA in 1996.

Generic Astelin should be stored at room temperature that varies between 20°-25°C. This nasal spray should be protected from freezing, light and moisture. The user should keep the bottle of nasal spray upright and the pump should be kept tight. It should be kept at such a place where kid and pet should not reach easily. The patient should always check the expiry date of the medicine before using it.

This nasal spray is used for intranasal administration. It contains azelastine hydrochloride as active ingredient that is chemically designated as (±)-1-(2H)-phthalazinone,4-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl]-2-(hexahydro-1-methyl-1H-azepin-4-yl)-, monohydrochloride. It appears as white, odourless and crystalline powder with bitter taste. This has a molecular formula of C22H24CIN3O•HCl and molecular weight is 418.37. it is sparingly soluble in water, methanol, propylene, glycol and slightly soluble in octanol, glycerine and ethanol. In addition to active ingredients, generic Astelin nasal spray also contains various inactive ingredient such as edetate disodium, citric acid, dibasic sodium phosphate, hypromellose, sodium chloride and purified water. Each metered spray, after priming gives 0.14 mg/ml of azelastine hydrochloride.                                                                        

Mechanism of action:

Generic Astelin is responsible for blocking the effect of histamine. Histamine is a natural chemical substance, produced by body and is responsible for causing allergic reaction in the body.


Generic Astelin is used for treating allergic rhinitis, runny nose, nasal itching and sneezing.

Side Effects:

Some of the side effects of generic Astelin that the patient might get after using it include:

  • Bitter taste in mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Sneezing
  • Fits
  • Muscle ache
  • Gain in weight
  • Nausea
  • Redness in eyes
  • Crawling sensation on the skin
  • Allergic reaction such as rash, swelling in face, severe dizziness, etc.

The dose of generic Astelin depends on the type of problem that the patient is suffering. Such as:

For treating seasonal allergic rhinitis:

  • For 5 years to 11 years: one or two sprays per nostril twice in a day
  • For 12 years and above: one spray per nostril twice in a day

For treating vasomotor rhinitis:

  •  For 12 years and above: two sprays per nostril twice in a day

Missed dose: 

The patient should not miss their dose for effective result. In case, they miss it, they should use it as soon as it is remembered. If it’s time for next dose, then the patient should skip the missed dose and use the next scheduled dose.


In case of overdose of medicine, the patient should consult to the doctor as soon as possible.


  • Before using generic Astelin, the patient should tell to the doctor in case they are allergic to it.
  • Patient might get allergy from preservative or inactive ingredient present in it. Therefore, they should always check the entire ingredient properly before using it.
  • If any patient has any medical history such as problem related to kidney, they should tell to the doctor prior using generic Astelin.
  • The medicine makes the patient feel drowsy. Therefore, the user should not do any work that requires alertness such as machine operation, etc.
  • Intake of alcohol and alcoholic beverages should be avoided.
  • Generic Astelin might pass to the breast milk and harm the infant. So the breast-feeding patient should consult to the doctor.
