Generic Atarax or Hydroxyzine is used to treat allergic reactions. Once it is injected, it is converted into its active form, called Cetirizine. Although both Hydroxyzine and Cetirizine act as antihistamine, yet it is observed that hydroxyzine causes more sedation.  This medicine should not be shared with other person showing similar symptoms as the user this medicine is showing. This might lead to serious side effect to the other person.

Generic Atarax or Hydroxyzine is  a first generation antihistamine. It belongs to class of medicine known as diphenylmethane and piperazine. It is used as strong anxiolytic and mild antiobessive & antipsychotic.  Due to its antihistamine effect, the medicine is used to trear itching, hyperalgesia, nausea and vomiting. Along with opioid analgesics, generic Atarax is used to increase the analgesic efficacy of opioids. 

Generic Atarax is available in two formulations; namely, pamoate and dihydrochloride. This medicine is marketed by Pfizer in the United States and now is available and manufactured at different geographical location under trade name of Vistaril, etc. In addition to this, some of the drug that contains pamoate salt is Vistaril, , Equipose, Masmoran and Paxistil. On the other hand, some drugs that contain hydrochloride salt are Alamon, Atarax, Tran-Q, orgatrax, Quiess and Tranquizine. 

Generic Atarax contains hydroxyzine hydrochloride as active ingredient that is chemically designated as 2-[2-[4-(p-Chloro-?-phenylbenzyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethoxy] ethanol dihydrochloride. It appears as white, odourless powder that is soluble in water. In addition to this, it also contains various inactive ingredients such as anhydrous lactose, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C Yellow No. 6, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80 , contain D&C Yellow No. 10 and FD&C Blue No. 2 and titanium dioxide. 

Generic Atarax should be stored at room temperature that varies from 15-30 degree centigrade. It should be protected from light, moisture and heat. The medicine should be kept in a closed and locked cupboard so that pet and child should not reach. The patient should always check the expiry date of the medicine.  

Mechanism of action: 

The body releases histamine during allergic reactions. This histamine binds with its receptor on cells and causes the cells to release chemical messengers. This is turn leads to sneezing, itching and increased production of mucus. Now, anti-histamine, binds with the histamine receptors. However, when it binds, do not stimulate the cells to release chemical messengers. Instead it prevents histamine from binding and stimulating the cells. 

Indication: 

Generic Atarax is used to treat anxiety and depression. This is also used for the treatment of allergic reactions.

Some of the side effects that the patient might experience after using generic Atarax are:

Following drugs might interact with generic Atarax:

Dosage:

The dose for the generic Atarax should be given based on the severity of the condition and response for the medicine. 

For the treatment of symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis: 

  • In adults- 50-100 mg
  • In child, less than 6 years- 50 mg daily in divided dose
  • In child above 6 years- 50-100 mg daily in divided dose 

 

For the treatment of pruritus, chronic urticarial, atopic and contact dermatitis: 

  • In adults- 25 mg
  • In child, less than 6 years- 50 mg daily in divided dose
  • In child above 6 years- 50-100 mg daily in divided dose 

In case the patient misses their dose, they should take it as soon as it is remembered by them. If it is time for the next dose, the patient should skip that dose and take the regular scheduled dose. In any case, the patient should not take double dose of the medicine to make up for the missed one. 

 

Overdose: 

In case overdose of the medicine is suspected then the patient should consul to their health care provider as early as possible. 

 

Precautions: 

  • Before taking Generic Atarax, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to it or any other medicine. 
  • Sometimes, the inactive ingredients present in the medicine might also cause allergic reaction in some users.
  • The medicine makes the patient feel dizzy, drowsy and also leads to blurred vision. Therefore, the patient should avoid work that requires alertness. 
  • If the patient has medical record of breathing problem, asthma, high pressure in eye (glaucoma), problem related to heart, kidney, liver, intestine, stomach, seizure, hyperthyroidism or difficulty in urination, they should tell to the doctor before using generic Atarax. 
  • The patient should limit the intake of alcohol during the treatment with this medicine. 
  • If the user of generic Atarax is using any prescription & non-prescription drug or herbal products then they should tell to the doctor so that the dose can be adjusted accordingly.
