Differin cream 0.1% is intended to manage acne vulgaris and pimples. Apart from the face, pimples or acne can also occurs in the back and chest. Acne or pimples are pustule or papules filled with pus and blood which can be sometime inflamed, painful and deep. This medication is also beneficial to manage comedones like blackheads and whiteheads. It acts by influencing the growth of the cells and reducing infection and swelling. It clears up the blocked pores of the skin preventing the formation of new acne. It is also effective for removing the spots and blemishes caused by the acnes and pimples.

Differin cream contains adapalene as active ingredient, which is a keratolytic medication. This kind of medicines has a tendency to bind with specific retinoic acid receptors in the nucleus of skin cells and thereby influence the cells behavior. Differin cream penetrates the inner layer of skin pores to regulate the synthesis of dead skin cells and sebum which is considered as the cause of acne. The medicine also works to block the hardening processes of the outer skin layer and promotes the growth of new skin cells. 

What are the active ingredients of differin cReam?

The active ingredient of this medication:

  • Adapalene, comes under the class of keratolytic class.

Other ingredients:

  • Glycerol
  • Squalane
  • carbomer 934P
  • Disodium edetate
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Methyl hydroxybenzoate
  • Propyl hydroxybenzoate
  • Methyl glucose sesquistearate
  • Phenoxyethanol, cyclomethicone
  • PEG-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate
  • Purified water.

Does this treatment cause any side effects?

Like other medicinal products differin is also associated with few side effects. However, these side effects are not common and probably you may not get any of them and complete your treatment successfully. Some of the side effects that are common include:

  • itching
  • dryness
  • redness
  • burning or peeling at the site of application

What are the conditions in which Differin is contraindicated?

Patient with following conditions should not use Differin for any health benefit:

  • any types of allergies to any of the contents of Differin cream are known
  • pregnant females or trying to conceive should not use this cream
  • patients who have eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis should not use differin
  • patient who are already using peeling agents, astringents or any other skin irritant products should avoid differin as it may produce additive irritant effects


How anyone should use Differin?

  • Differin should be applied on the affected area of the skin once daily or as prescribed by your dermatologist. It is preferred to be used in the evening or before bedtime.
  • Before applying, clean the skin area with a mild cleanser and then dab the skin with cotton cloth. Do not use harsh soap or cleansers as it can cause irritation on the skin.
  • After that, apply a thin layer of the cream gently on the affected area. Using large amounts or more than often than prescribed can cause adverse reactions on your treatment.
  • Avoid contact of Differin cream with your eyes, eyelids, nostrils and mouth as it can create irritation on the soft tissues of these delicate areas.
  • Avoid using cream on the broken or damaged skin or open wounds.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure as this cream may make you more sensitive to sun.
  • Use this treatment with Differin cream for the limited period of time as recommended to you. 

What is the duration of treatment with Differin for acne?

Differin cream should be used daily for the recommended duration following all the prescription guidelines. Usually, the treatment with Differin starts to show visible benefits on the symptoms of acne after 4-8 weeks regular treatment, with more improvement after further use. 

What should be done in case of missed dose of Differin?

If you miss a dose of Differin cream, there is nothing to get worried, just apply the cream as soon as you remember. However, you should skip the missed dose if it is already the time for next dose. Using extra doses or more than recommended quantity to make up for the missed dose should not be done by anyone.

How should Differin be stored?

  • Differin cream should be stored at room temperatures below 25°C at a moisture free place.
  • It should not be refrigerated.
  • Keep it away from the reach of kids.
