Premarin contains the mixture of conjugated estrogens which are obtained from the natural sources. Estrogen is one of the most important female hormones which is synthesised in the ovaries. Premarin is the synthetic version of estrogen that is used to manage the menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, burning sensation or irritation. These symptoms are occurred due to the lack of estrogen before and after the menopause. Since Premarin exhibits the properties similar to Estrogen, so it is the best option to treat the post-menopausal symptoms. In addition, it is also used to treat osteoporosis in women which mostly occurs at post-menopausal period. Premarin also works excellent as a hormonal replacement therapy to manage ovarian failure in females.

How does Premarin work?

Premarin is a conjugated estrogen, so it is a replacement of endogenous estrogen which is very important for the development as well as maintenance of reproductory system in females. This hormone is responsible for sexual characteristics. However, premarin works by the following mechanisms:

  • Premarin acts on the tissues of different body parts.
  • It initiates the growth of the uterine endometrium inner lining.
  • This medication is important for the maintenance and development of female sexual organ.
  • This medicine is also helpful for the secretion of cervix. 

What are the indications for Premarin?

Premarin is used in the following conditions:

  • For the treatment of post-menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness, hot flashes, burning sensation and irritation.
  • Ovarian failure: Hormone replacement therapy.
  • Osteoprorsis: In post-menopausal period.
  • Breast cancer.

What are the contra-indications of Premarin?

Premarin is contra-indicated in some conditions, such as;

  • If the patient is experiencing breast cancer or has a history of it.
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
  • Estrogen dependent neoplasia.
  • Deep vein thrombosis.
  • Pulmonary embolism.
  • Hepatic and renal disorder.
  • In pregnancy or lactating mother.

What are the possible side effects of premarin?

To avoid the unwanted complications, always take this medication according to the instructions of your physician. Some of the side effects of premarin are mentioned below:

Very serious side effects:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Pain in the lower limb
  • Swelling of the feet, hands and ankles.
  • Increase hair growth
  • Loss of hair
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Jaundice
  • Drowsiness and izziness

Note: This medicine should be discontinued and urgent medical help should be taken if you notice the above symptoms.

What are the dosages of Premarin?

Dosages of Premarin are:

  • In osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms: 0.3mg/day. The dose can be increased depending on the intensity of the condition.
  • In ovarian failure: 1.25mg every day, which should be taken for three weeks that should be followed by one week off.
  • In breast cancer: The recommended dose of premarin in breast cancer is 10mg daily for 3 months.
  • In abnormal uterine bleeding: 25mg IV or IM injection, 6-12 hourly, depending on the requirement.

How should you store this medicine?

Store this medication in room temperature, below the temperature of 30 degree C. Always keep the strip of the tablets in a moist free place.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it at any time in the day. But never try to take the missed dose if you recall it at or near the time of next dose. In such situation, skip the missed dose and continue with your next schedules.

What are the important precautions associated to premarin?

The important precautions you should take during the course of premarin are:

  • You should never take this medication if you are hypersensitive to this medication.
  • This drug should not be taken if you are facing any blood related problem like anaemia, leukemia, sickle cell anaemia etc.
  • Always ignore this medication if you are suffering from any heart disease or confirm from your whether you are fit for the medication or not.
  • This medication can alter your blood sugar level. So always be cautious and check your blood glucose regularly while taking the dose of Premarin.
  • Premarin is contraindicated in children.
