SOMA / CARISOPRODOl is a muscle relaxant used for muscle spasms and other musculoskeletal injuries. It blocks signals which are responsible for pain. It does not act directly on the muscles but acts on brain. It is prescribed for short term painful conditions. Muscle relaxants are the drugs which act on brain and not on muscles. These have sedative action on body. They are used for painful conditions like lower back pain.

WHAT IS THE MECHANISM OF ACTION?

It is a centrally acting drug that works as a sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant. It blocks transmission of pain signals to the brain which results in relieving from the pain.

WHAT ARE THE USES/INDICATIONS?

It is used as a pain reliever in acute conditions of muscles like muscular spasms and musculoskeletal injuries.

 WHAT IS THE DOSAGE?

SOMA tablet is available in two strengths:

  • SOMA oral tablets 250 mg
  • SOMA oral tablets 350 mg

 Recommended dose is 250-350 mg three times a day and at bedtime. Follow the dosage regimen prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it for more than two or three weeks unless until prescribed by doctor.

 HOW TO USE?

Take the medicine in the same way as prescribed by your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the dose by yourself. Take the tablet with a glass of water on an empty stomach. If you forget to take the medicine of the day, take it as you remember. Do not double the dose on the next day. Leave the dose of last day and take your regular dose.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Side effects like nausea, dizziness, fatigue or headache may occur. These are not serious but if they prolong then consult your doctor.

Some serious side effects that require immediate medical attention are:

  • Allergic reaction to the drug resulting in redness/itching, swelling of lips/ throat/neck, rashes and difficulty in breathing.
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Pain or difficult urination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chills, fever

WHAT ARE THE DRUG INTERACTIONS?

  • Other CNS depressants like Triprolidine, Methotrimeprazine, anti anxiety drugs( Alperazolam, Diazepam, Zolpidem, Meprobamate), anti allergices (Cetrizine, Diphenhydramine) , other muscle relaxants and narcotic pain relievers. When taken with SOMA increase the CNS depressant effect.
  • Ticlopidine
  • Delavirdine
  • Droperidol. It enhances CNS depressant action of SOMA.
  • Fluconazole
  • Fluvoxamine
  • Gemfibrozil
  • Isoniazid
  • Modafinil
  • Sitaxentan

This list of drugs is inadequate. There are so many other drugs that can interact. So inform your doctor about all the medicines you are using before starting therapy with SOMA.

WHAT ARE THE CONTRAINDICATIONS?

  • If you have allergy to SOMA or meprobamate, tybamate, mebitamate: ask your doctor
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history like if you are having blood disorder (acute intermittent porphyria) and epilepsy (seizures). It is highly contraindicated in both situations.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED?

  • This medication should not be used during first 3 months of pregnancy. However during the last 6 months of pregnancy, this medication can be used only with the consultation of doctor.
  • This drug passes through breast milk and can cause harm to your baby. So always consult doctor before using it if you are breastfeeding.
  • SOMA can make you dizzy or sleepy so don’t drive or use heavy machinery after taking it.
  • If you are taking any other sedative medicine then always remember that SOMA is also a sedative and if you are taking both of them together you can feel severe drowsiness. Always tell your doctor about the medicines you are using.
  • If you have liver and/or kidney disease consult doctor.
  • DO not drink alcohol while you are on a therapy with SOMA. When combined with alcohol can diminish your alertness.
  • Should be used in elderly only with the prescriptions of doctor.
  • Should not be given to children below 12 years of age.
  • Do not take it without prescription of doctor for more than two or three weeks.
  • SOMA can cause addiction .It should only be used by that person for whom it is prescribed.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF OVERDOSE?

Over dosage can occur accidently or when used with other CNS depressants. In case of overdose or poisoning, go to your emergency room or call for help. Symptoms of overdose are:

  • dilated, or enlarged pupils (black part of the eye)
  • difficulty in seeing things around you
  • unable to move eye and eyelids
  • unconsciousness
  • confusion
  • difficulty in breathing
  • hallucinations, false beliefs
  • severe headache
  • stiffness or tightness of muscles
  • pale or blue lips, fingernails, or skin
  • protruded tongue
  • weakness of arms and legs
  • uncontrolled twisting movements of the neck, trunk, arms, or legs
  • uncontrolled facial expression
  • seizure or convulsions

HOW TO STORE THE PRODUCT?

Store this medication at room temperature 20° - 25°C (68° - 77°F) away from the reach of children. Do not flush the tablets. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.
