HOW DOES IT ACT?

Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction by inhibiting Phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE 5). cGMP is a chemical in the body which causes relaxation of vascular smooth muscles and increases blood flow to various tissues of the body. Production of cGMP is stimulated by nitric oxide and endothelial cells.  PDE5 (phosphodiesterase5) is an enzyme, found in the erectile tissue of the penis, vascular endothelium (walls of blood vessels) and retina of the eyes , which carries out the breakdown of cGMP. By inhibiting PDE5, tadalafil increases the concentration of cGMP in tissues. Increased concentration of cGMP results in dilation of blood vessels and smooth muscle relaxation which results in erection because of increased blood flow to the penis.
