What is Efudex?


Efudex or Fluorouracil is a drug, which is used for the treatment of actinic keratosis or solar keratosis and skin cancer or basal cell carcinoma. This drug is a pyrimidine analog, which comes under the class of antimetabolites. Safety and efficacy in other indications have not been established. This medication acts by destroying the abnormal cells that causes the cancer. Your doctor will diagnose the condition first by several examinations or tests before prescribing this medication. Always remember not to discontinue this drug without consulting with your doctor. This medication is available in the form of cream or solution. You should always apply this medication once or twice in a day, after washing the area with plain water. How does Efudex work?

This medication works by inhibiting the synthesis of thymidylate synthase enzyme, which in turn inhibits the synthesis of pyrimidine thymidine. Pyrimidin thymidine is an important nucleoside that is required for the replication of DNA. When you take this medication, it causes insufficiency of dTMP (Deoxiuridine thymidine monophosphate), which leads to degradation as well as death of the cancerous cells.Thus it helps in the treatment of the cancer or precancerous lesion.

What are the indications of Efudex?

Systemic indications:

  • Cancer of anus, stomach,colorectal, oesophagu,s breast and pancrease.

Topical indications:

  • Skin cancers (particularly of neck and head).

Other indications:

  • Actinic keratosis or solar keratosis.

What are the contraindications of Efudex?

  • In severe debilitated patients.
  • In myelosuppression due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • In pregnancy and lactation period.
  • It is contra-indicated in patients who are not malignant.

What are the drug interactions of Efudex?

  • Antiviral drugs
  • Sorivudine
  • Warfarin

Note: Efudex increases the prothombin time (clotting time) in patients who are under warfarin.

What are the side effects of Efudex?

The side effects of this medication are rare and seen only in 1% of the patients who use the medication. But if you develop any symptom that bothers you, consult with your doctor as early as possible. Some of the side effects are:

  • Itchiness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Burning
  • Peeling or scaling
  • Scarring
  • Skin discoloration
  • Watery eyes
  • Oozing
  • Tenderness or soreness

What is the dosage and method for application of this medication?

Apply this medication on the affected are once or twice in a day for the duration of 2-6 weeks. Your physician may increase or decrease the duration of the medication depending on the severity of the condition.

Method: Wash your hand with a mild soap before applying this medication. Clean the affected area with plain water and let it dry. After minutes, take small amount of cream just enough to fill the affected area, and apply in the lesion. Wash your hands immediately after applying the cream, even you wear gloves. Do not cover the lesion with any dressing pack or bandage. You can just cover the affected lesion loosely only with gauze. Always avoid applying the cream in around the eyes, mouth, nose or mucous membrane.

What should be done if you miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you recall about it. But never take the missed dose near to the next dose or with it. Avoid a double dose, because it can cause serious complication.

How should the medication be stored?

You should store the medication at the temperature between 20-25 degrees, in a cool and dry place. Always keep this drug away from pets and children.

What are precautions?

  • Do not use Efudex cream if you have hypersensitivity to fluorouracil or any other ingredient of the preparation.
  • Avoid this medication or inform your doctor if you have any history of infection or open sores on the skin.
  • This drug is not used in some medication particularly if you have deficiency of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase-DPD.
  • Always avoid sun exposure while you use the medication by applying some protective measures like sunscreen lotion.
  • Always consult with your physician if you are using other medication or cosmetic before using this cream.
  • This medication is prohibited in pregnancy and lactating women.
