Depression is a type of mental illness in which patient suffered from various emotional and physical disorders and experience sense of sadness and gloom many a times. The cause of depression is believed to be unusual levels of certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that nerves use to communicate. Amitriptyline raises the mood level by elevating levels of neurotransmitters in the nerves. The drug works in the central nervous system (CNS) to promote the sad mood of depression patients. Researchers have supported the theory of normalization of the balance of natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain namely serotonin and norepinephrine, to be the result of healing through Elavil. Initially, drug starts to show its effects on patients of depression within 3 to 4 days, but it might take up to one month to actually show full healing effect. In May 1983, Amitriptyline got approval from the FDA to be used as an anti-depressant.
