Acular solution is an ophthalmic medication used to relieve certain post-operative surgery like eye pain, stinging and burning sensation of the eye. This medication is mostly used after corneal refractive surgery. The main ingredient of this medication is ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% which is belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This eye solution is also indicated to relieve itching caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. In addition, this eye solution is the best option for the management of post-operative inflammation in the patient of cataract extraction.

How does Acular work?

Acular eye drop works by the following mechanisms:

  • It blocks the action of cyclooxygenase in the body and prevents the production of prostaglandins that is responsible for the development of arthritis, pain, inflammation and swelling.

What are the indications of Acular?

Acular eye drop is indicated to relieve eye pain and inflammation.

What are the contraindications of Acular eye drop?

Acular eye solution is contraindicated in the following conditions, such as:

  • In the people who is hypersensitive to aspirin and other NSAIDs.
  • This medication should be avoided if you are allergic to ketorolac tromethamine.
  • In the patient of asthma, urticarial and rhinitis.
  • Acular in contra-indicated in children
  • This medication in pregnancy and lactating women.

What are the possible side effects of this medication?

The side effects of any medicine can effects people in many ways. Some of the side effects of this medication are mentioned below. But it does mean that all the patients using this medication will catch the side effects. The side effects are reported only 1-2% of people who use this medicine.

Common side effects:

  • Irritation of the eye.
  • Burning or stinging of the eye.
  • Infection on a small surface of the eye.
  • Fluid retention in the eyelids which causes swelling.
  • Red eye.

Very rare side effects:

  • Corneal ulcer.
  • Headache.
  • Blurred vision.

What are the drug interactions of this medication?

This eye drop is not reported to interact with any other medication. Always tell your physician if you are taking other medication before using Acular eye solution including the herbal products, vitamins, minerals and all prescribed and non-prescribed medication. If you need to use any other eye drop, then always keep a gap of at least 5 minutes. Always apply the eye ointment or gel in last.

What is the dosage of Acular eye drop?

Acular eye drop is applied in the following way;

  • In seasonal allergy/conjunctivitis: One drop of solution is applied on the affected eye, should be given four times a day.
  • In for post-operative inflammation and pain: One drop of solution on the inflamed eye, four times in a day. In case of cataract, apply the dose after 24 hours of the surgery, which should be continued till 2 weeks at post-operative period.

How should you store this medication?

This medication should be stored below the temperature of 30 degree C. It should be protected from light and heat.

What are the precautions associated with Acular eye solution?

  • Always avoid driving vehicle or any machinery activities after putting this eye drop because this medication can cause temporary blurring of your vision.
  • Acular eye drop can discolour the contact lens and also it can be absorbed by the contact lens. So always give a gap of at least 15-20 minutes to avoid any complication.
  •  Contact your doctor immediately if the eye infection becomes worst. Your doctor may prescribe you an antibiotic to solve the problem.
  • Caution should be taken if there is any blood clotting in the eye or any corneal problem.
