Flagyl is an effective antibiotic used for the cure of many kinds of infections including respiratory skin, gastrointestinal, vaginal infection and also for bone and joint infection. It is also known as anti-infective. But this drug is not used for the treatment of vaginal yeast infection.

Dosage

The exact recommended dose depends upon the type of infection, age and other medication. The recommended of Flagyl is 400 mg twice or thrice a day. The effective and preferred course of this medicine is 3-7 days. Take this medicine after the meal. Do not take this drug in empty stomach. Take this tablet with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. 

Side Effects

Side effects are the effects caused by the drug other than the main use of the drug these are unwanted effects of the drug that may cause some serious problem but sometimes it can be ignored. The common side effects of Flagyl are diarrhoea, dizziness, stomach ache or disturbance vaginal itching or discharge, loss of balance, dry mouth, and loss of appetite, headache, sore tongue, muscle pain, neck stiffness, and drowsiness. Some of the serious side effects which may require medical help are confusion, fever, chills, sensitivity to light, numbness, skin rashes, swelling, seizures, clumsiness, burning sensation during urination,

Some of the precautions to be taken before having Flagyl or metronidazole are

  • If you have any history of liver disorder, kidney disease, epilepsy brain disorders or any genetic problem consult your health provider before having this drug.
  • Do not recommend this drug to the lactating mothers.
  • Do not take alcohol during medication because alcohol may cause stomach problem, vomiting, cramps, flushing.

Flagyl is used as an antibiotic against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are those bacteria which do not require oxygen to survive. The bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the bacteria are beneficial to us and some causes illness like gingivitis, diverticulitis, and appendicitis. Missed dose:

Always follow the regular schedule of you medication. But if you missed your dose in any case take it as soon as you remember. But if you haven’t reminded till time for your next dose then skip the missed dose but don’t take the double dose to make up the missed one.

Overdose:

Overdose of any medication may cause some serious side effects. If you have taken the overdose and feel the symptoms like nausea, vomiting, lack of muscle coordination seek immediate medical help.

Contraindication:

Contraindication is a condition in which a specific drug or treatment in strictly prohibited. Contraindications related to the Flagyl or metronidazole’s are

  • Patients with hypersensitivity to metronidazole and any other ingredient of the drug.
  • Pregnant ladies should not take this drug in the first trimester.
  • Do not take metronidazole with alcohol or any other products containing alcohol.

 Interaction:

When two or more drugs are taken together they may interact with each other and cause the drug interaction. This drug interaction sometime increases the function of drugs, sometimes decreases or sometimes alters the effect of a drug.

Flagyl (Metronidazole) shows interactions as follows

  • Blood thinners like cholestyramine, Coumadin, lithium, and phenobarbital.
  • Drugs used for the treatment of Seizure are phenytoin, phenobarbital.
  • Lithium containing drugs like eskalith, lithobid.
  • Antiabuse drugs like disfulfiramin.
  • HIV drugs like ampernavir.
  • drug used for epilepsy or fits like phenytoin
  • Anticancer drugs like busulfan, 5-Fluorouracil.
  • Contraceptive pills.
  • Drugs used for stomach ulcers like cimetidine.

Storage:

Keep Flagyl at room temperature below 25˚C. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.  Keep it out of reach of children.
