Generic Flonase is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid. This is used as nasal spray and has anti-inflammatory effect. The medicine is used to treat nasal symptoms like sneezing, congestion and runny nose that are caused due to seasonal or perennial allergies. Generic Flonase should be used by individual of age more than 2 years.

Generic Flonase belong to the group of medicine known as corticosteroid. This medicine is used to treat asthma, allergic rhinitis and eosinophilia esophagitis. Beside this, it is also helpful in curing eczema and psoriasis. 

Generic Flonase is manufactured by different companies located at various places across the globe. This medicine is marketed under different trade names such as Flovent (GlaxoSmithKline), Flixotide, Flonase, Flixonse, Pirinase, Ezicas and Nasofan (Teva). In combination with Salmeterol, this medicine is also available under the brand of Advair or Seretide. FDA has approved this medicine in October 1994. 

Generic Flonase should be stored at a temperature ranging from 4° and 30°C. The medicine should be protected from light, heat and dampness. It should be kept away from the reach of child and pet.   

Generic Flonase contains fluticasone propionate as active ingredient that is chemically represented as S-(fluoromethyl) 6α,9-difluoro-11β-17-dihydroxy-16α-methyl-3-oxoandrosta-1,4-diene-17β-carbothioate, 17-propionate. It is white to off-white coloured powder having empirical formula of C25H31F3O5S and 500.6 as molecular weight. It is insoluble in water and soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethyl formamide, methanol and ethanol.

Generic Flonase contains various inactive ingredients such as polysorbate 80, microcrystalline cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose sodium, dextrose, etc.

Generic Flonase is administered to the nasal mucosa using atomizing spray pump and meter. The user should avoid getting the spray in their eyes or mouth. If accidently, it happens, the user need to rinse with plenty of water. 


 Mechanism of action: 

Generic Flonase works by inhibiting several types of cells and chemicals that are involved in allergic reaction, immune and inflammatory responses. 



Generic Flonase is used to treat allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, stuffy and runny nose, etc.


Side Effects: 

The patient might suffer from side effects after using generic Flonase. However, not all patients using this drug will suffer from such conditions. It depends on the tolerance power and immune system of the individual. Some of the side effects are: 

  • Nasal dryness
  • Irritation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bleeding from nose
  • Pain in nose and eyes
  • White patches in the nose or back of the throat
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Headache
  • Swelling in ankles or feet
  • Increase in urine frequency
  • Problem in vision 


Drug interactions: 

The drugs that might interact with Generic Flonase are: 

  • Ritonavir
  • Ketoconazole 



For child of age group 4 years and above, generic Flonase should be given to the user at low dose of 1 spray in each nostril (100 mcg) once in a day. 

In case, the user does not feel any changes, the dose can be slightly increased to 2 sprays in each nostril (200 mcg). Once, the proper response is achieved then the dose is again reduced to 1 spray. In any case, the maximum dose should not exceed more than 2 sprays in each nostril in a day. 

The adult should use 2 sprays in each nostril once daily (200 mcg) that can also be divided into 100 mcg twice in a day. In case, the user responds to the desired result, these 2 sprays can be reduced to 1 spray once daily for maintenance therapy. 


Missed dose: 

In case, the patient misses their dose, then it should be taken as soon as remembered. If it is time for the next scheduled dose, then the missed dose should be skipped. In any case, the user should not take any extra medicine to make up for the missed dose. 



Overdose of Generic Flonase might lead to menstrual problem, increased acne or facial hair, thinning of skin, weakness, etc. therefore , if overdose is suspected, the patient should consult to the doctor as early as possible.



  • The user should not take generic Flonase if they are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine of same class.
  • The inactive ingredients might also lead to allergic reactions in some of the user. Hence, proper care should be taken by the patient.
  • Prior taking generic Flonase, the patient should tell to their doctor in case they are suffering from glaucoma, cataract, liver disease, herpes simplex, diabetes, etc.
  • Generic Flonase lowers the blood cells of the body that is responsible for fighting with infection. Therefore, if the user is exposed to chicken pox or measles, they need to contact doctor as soon as possible.
  • Generic Flonase nasal spray should be used only for 120 sprays. After that the bottle should be thrown away even if medicine is left in that as it might not show proper quantity of the medicine.
