Generic Lumigan is an effective medicine that is used to reduce intraocular pressure in patient with narrow angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension It is known to resemble prostaglandin, a natural chemical that is produced by the body. Besides increasing intraocular pressure, this is also used to increase the growth of the eyelashes.  FDA has approved Lumigan in March 2001 and Latisse in December 2008. Generic Lumigan contains bimatoprost as active ingredient.

Generic Lumigan should be stored at a temperature that varies from 2-25 degree centigrade. It should be protected from heat, dampness and light. The patient should always check the expiry date of the medicine before using it. The medicine should be kept at such a place where child and pet should not reach easily. 

 Mechanism of action: 

Generic Lumigan reduces intra ocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humour, a fluid, from patient suffering from glaucoma. Excess of this fluid might damage the optic nerve and can even cause loss of vision. In addition to this, the medicine is also known to increase the growth of eyelashes by increasing the duration of the growth phase of the eyelashes. 

Indication: 

Generic Lumigan is used for the treatment of high pressure inside eye that occur due to glaucoma. 

Side effects: 

Some patient might get side effects after using Lumigan such as: 

  • Eye irritation
  • Itching of the eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Oozing or discharge from eyes
  • Changes in the vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Eye lash darken
  • Dizziness
  • Darkening of the skin around eyes
  • Permanent brown pigmentation of the iris
  • Mild eye discomfort 

 

Drug interactions: 

If the patient is using any other type of medicine, then they should tell to the doctor before using generic Lumigan as this medicine might interact with some other medicine and can cause serious health issues.

 

Dosage:

To reduce the intraocular pressure, the patient should use one drop of generic Lumigan in the affected eye once in day in the evening. The patient can feel the effect in approximately 4 hours after using the medicine. The effect of the medicine lasts up to 8-12 hours.

To increase the eyelashes, the patient should use one drop of this medicine with an applicator along the skin of the upper eyelid at the base of the eyelashes for each eyes daily in the evening.

 

Missed dose: 

In case the patient misses any dose, then they should use it as soon as it is remembered. If it is time next dose, then they should skip the missed dose and take the regular dose scheduled. Do not double the dose with this medicine or any other medicine to make up for the missed one.

 

Overdose: 

In case overdose is suspected, the patient should consult to the doctor. 

 

Precautions: 

  • Before using generic Lumigan, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to this medicine have any other type of allergy.
  • Sometimes, the inactive ingredients present in the medicine might also cause allergic reaction. Therefore, the patient should check the entire ingredients properly before using it.
  • In case, the patient has any medical history of any disease such as eye problem, macular edema, iritis, uveitis, extraction of lens, etc. then they should tell to the doctor before using the medicine.
  • In case any patient develops eye infection or injury then they should consult to the doctor for further use of this medicine.
    • Pregnant patient and nursing patient should use this medicine only if their doctor has suggested for it.
