Verdenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction which works by acting as inhibitor of an enzyme named “Phosphodiesterase 5” (PDE5). PDE 5 carries out the breakdown of cGMP. It is found in the erectile tissue of the penis, vascular endothelium (walls of blood vessels) and retina of the eyes. During sexual stimulation, nerve ending release nitric oxide. Nitric oxide and endothelial cells stimulate production of cGMP which results in relaxation of vascular smooth muscles and increases blood flow to various tissues of the body. LEVITRA increases the concentration of cGMP in tissues by inhibiting PDE5. Increased cGMP cause vasodilation of blood vessels of the penis which results in erection.
