LIORESAL is a central nervous system depressant which activates GABA-B receptors. Stimulation of these receptors decreases frequency and intensity of muscle spasms. It acts mainly on the spinal cord. It does not act directly on the muscles. GABA is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is inhibitory in nature. It plays a role in regulating excitability of neurons and directly responsible for the regulation of muscle tone.

LIORESAL is indicated for the relief of the spasms of voluntary muscle in disorders like multiple sclerosis, tumours of the spinal cord, other spinal injuries, motor neuron disease, transverse myelitis, a traumatic partial section of the cord, cerebrovascular accidents, cerebral palsy, meningitis and head injury.
