Generic Medrol or Methylprednisolone belong to the class of medicine known as corticosteroid drug. The drug is highly demanded for its anti-inflammatory response, metabolism and immune responses. It is also used for arthritis therapy, bronchial inflammation, acute bronchitis, systemic lupus erythematous, ulcerative colitis, leukaemia and multiple sclerosis. Beside this, it is also used for non-penetrating spinal cord injury and vestibular neuritis. Generic Medrol is a corticosteroid drug. It is used by people who are unable to produce enough corticosteroid naturally, a condition known as Addison’s disease. The drug is known to increase the blood pressure, salt and water retention with loss of potassium ion in from the body. Therefore, the user should limit the limit the salt intake and increase the potassium intake. In addition, it might lead to loss of calcium and in turn can lead to osteoporosis where bones become brittle. Hence, calcium and vitamin intake is must. The diabetic patient need to check their blood sugar level frequently as Medrol can affect this. The user of generic Medrol should always keep close eyes on their adrenal function test and blood pressure.

Generic Medrol is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies located at various geographical locations. Methylprednisolone is available in market under different brand names such as Solu-Medrol, Medrol, etc. the medicine got approval from FDA in October 1957. 

Generic Medrol should be stored at room temperature that ranges from 20-25 degree centigrade. it should be protected from heat, moisture and light. The medicine should be placed at such a place where child and pet should not reach. 

Generic Medrol contains methylprednisolone as active ingredient that is chemically known as 1,4 - diene - 3,20-dione, 11, 17, 21-trihydroxy-6-methyl-, (6α, 11β) and have molecular weight of 374.48. It appears as white, odourless and crystalline powder. This is soluble in alcohol, dioxane, methanol, acetone, ether & chloroform and insoluble in water. The inactive ingredient present in generic Medrol 4 mg are calcium stearate, corn starch, lactose, mineral oil, sorbic acid and sucrose. 

The patient should not stop taking generic Medrol without consulting the doctor. In case, the patient stops it suddenly without consulting to the doctor then they might experience symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, nausea, headache, tiredness, dizziness, muscle pain, etc.


 Mechanism of action: 

Generic Medrol works by modifying the immune response of the body and also lowers the ability of the body to fight against infection.

Drug interactions:

Some of the drugs that might interact with Generic Medrol are: 

  • Cyclosporine
  • Rifampin
  • Phenytonin
  • Ketoconazole
  • Troleandomycin 



Generic Medrol should be taken with food in order to prevent stomach upset. The dose of medicine depends on the severity of the condition, response of the medicine and age and weight of the user. In general, the dose might vary from 4 mg to 48 mg daily. 


Missed dose:

In case, the patient misses their dose, they should take as soon as remember. Missed dose should be skipped if by the time it is remembered and it’s already time for next dose. In any case, double dose should not be taken to make up for the missed one.  



In case of overdose of the medicine, the patient might experience dizziness, faintness, fever, loss of appetite, low blood pressure & blood sugar, muscle pain and nausea.  In such case, they need to consult to the doctor to avoid serious problem. 



  • Before taking generic Medrol, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine.
  • The inactive ingredient might also lead to allergic reactions in some of the users. Therefore, the patient should check the medicine properly before using it.
  • In case, the patient is having any medical history of bleeding problem, blood clots, brittle bone, diabetes, eye disease, heart problem, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or intestine problem or seizures, they should tell to the doctor proactively.  
  • Generic Medrol might cause dizziness in the patients. So the user of the medicines should avoid work that requires alertness such as machine operation, driving vehicle, etc.
  • Intake of alcohol and alcoholic beverages should be avoided by the patient during the treatment with this medicine.
