Generic Medrol belong to corticosteroid group of drug. It is used for anti-inflammatory response, metabolism and immune responses. In addition, it is also used for arthritis therapy, bronchial inflammation, acute bronchitis, systemic lupus erythematous, ulcerative colitis, leukaemia and multiple sclerosis. Beside this, it is also used for treating non-penetrating spinal cord injury and vestibular neuritis.

Generic Medrol belong to the group of medicine known as corticosteroid drug. It is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies located at various geographical locations. Methylprednisolone is available in market under different brand names such as Solu-Medrol, Medrol, etc. the medicine got approval from FDA in October 1957.

Generic Medrol should be stored at room temperature that ranges from 20-25 degree centigrade. It should be protected from heat, moisture and light. The medicine should be placed at such a place where child and pet should not reach. The patient should always check the expiry date of the medicine before using it.

Generic Medrol contains methylprednisolone as active ingredient. This is chemically designated as 1,4 - diene - 3,20-dione, 11, 17, 21-trihydroxy-6-methyl-, (6α, 11β) having molecular weight of 374.48. This appears as white, odourless and crystalline powder. It is  soluble in alcohol, dioxane, methanol, acetone, ether & chloroform and insoluble in water. The various inactive ingredients present in this medicine includes calcium stearate, corn starch, lactose, mineral oil, sorbic acid and sucrose

The patient should not stop taking generic Medrol without consulting the doctor. In case, the patient stops it suddenly without consulting to the doctor then they might experience symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, nausea, headache, tiredness, dizziness, muscle pain, etc. 

 Mechanism of action: 

Generic Medrol works by modifying the immune response of the body and also lowers the ability of the body to fight against infection.

Indication: 

Generic Medrol is used for following in the treatment of following diseases: 

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psoriatic ulcerative colitis
  • Inflammation in iris, uvea, conjunctiva, optic nerve, etc.
  • Cohn’s disease
  • Asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Systemic lupus erythematous
  • Acute gouty arthritis
  • Drug-induced arthritis
  • Atopic dermatitis

 

Side Effects:

The patient might get side effects after using generic Medrol such as: 

  • Dizziness
  • Facial flushing
  • Headache
  • Increased sweating
  • Whirling motion
  • Change in body fat
  • Change in menstrual period
  • Tarry stool
  • Sore throat
  • Slow wound healing
  • Fever
  • Chill
  • Pain in joint
  • Change in vision
  • Unusual gain in weight 

 

Drug interactions: 

Generic Medrol might interact with some drugs such as: 

  • Phenytonin
  • Ketoconazole
  • Troleandomycin
  • Cyclosporine
  • Rifampin 

 

Dosage:

The dose of medicine depends on the severity of the condition, response of the medicine and age and weight of the user. In general, the dose might vary from 4 mg to 48 mg daily. Generic Medrol should be taken with food in order to prevent stomach upset. 

 

Missed dose: 

In case, the patient misses the dose, then they should take it as soon as it is remembered. In case, they recall about it and it’s already time for next dose then they should skip the missed dose and take the regular dose. 

 

Overdose: 

The patient should contact to the doctor in case overdose is suspected. 

Precautions:

  • Before taking generic Medrol, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine.
  • Generic Medrol might cause dizziness in the patients. So the user of the medicines should avoid work that requires alertness such as machine operation, driving vehicle, etc.
  • The patient should limit the intake of alcohol and alcoholic during the treatment with this medicine.
  • The inactive ingredient might also lead to allergic reactions in some of the users. Therefore, the patient should check the medicine properly before using it.
  • In case, the patient is having any medical history of bleeding problem, blood clots, brittle bone, diabetes, eye disease, heart problem, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach or intestine problem or seizures, they should tell to the doctor proactively.
