SKELAXIN (metaxalone) is a muscle relaxant used to relax muscles. It relieves pain caused by strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal conditions. It is a central nervous system depressant. SKELAXIN comes in dosage form of 400 mg and 800 mg tablets. Among muscle relaxants it is the strongest one with very less side effects. Its generic name is metaxalone.

Muscle relaxants are the drugs which relax muscles by either acting centrally or directly on the muscles. These have sedative action on body. They are used for painful conditions like back pain or other musculoskeletal pains.

 SKELAXIN relaxes the muscles of the body and produces sedation. Due to which it relieves pain. It has general central nervous system depressant action. It affects brain and spinal cord, does not act directly on muscles, motor end plates and nerve fibres. It is not opium like drug. It when used with physical therapy results in better relief of muscular pain.


SKELAXIN is used for painful musculoskeletal conditions of short duration.


Dosage differs in different patients and indications. Always follow the treatment plan of your doctor. SKELAXIN oral tablets are available in two strengths:

  • SKELAXIN 400 mg oral tablets
  • SKELAXIN 800 mg oral tablets

Dose of SKELAXIN for adults and children above 12 years of age is 800 mg three or four times a day.


Take the medicine in the same way as prescribed by your doctor. Take it three or four times a day with food. Fat rich food increases its absorption. If you forget to take the medicine of the day take it as soon as you remember but do not double the dose on next day. Leave the dose of last day and take your regular dose. Do not enhance or decrease the dose unless untill your doctor tells you to do so.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?                                                                       

SKELAXIN is a strong muscle relaxant with very less number of side effects. The most frequent reactions to SKELAXIN are drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nervousness, irritability, nausea and vomiting, abdominal discomfort.

Other adverse reactions are:

  • Hematologic: leukopenia, haemolytic anaemia;
  • Hypersensitivity or allergy: redness/itching, swelling of lips/ throat/neck, rashes and difficulty in breathing.
  • Liver related: yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine, stomach pain, pale stools, loss of appetite


If you are taking some other prescription or non-prescription drugs during therapy with SKELAXIN, there might be chances of interaction. Here is a list of few drugs that can interact.

  •  anti-anxiety drugs (Alprazolam, Diazepam, Zolpidem, Meprobamate)
  • anti allergices (Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine)
  • other muscle relaxants
  • Opioids like codeine
  • Tricyclic anti-depressants

All above mentioned medicines are sedative in nature so when taken with SKELAXIN they have enhanced sedative action. This list of drugs is not complete. There are a large number of drugs that can interact. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are using.


  • Tell your doctor if you are having kidney or liver disease before using SKELAXIN. In this case a dose adjustment or careful monitoring is required.
  • If you have allergic to metaxalone tell your doctor after he prescribes it to you.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history like if you have anaemia, mental or mood disorders (schizophrenia) and brain disease (seizures, strokes).
  • False-positive Benedict's tests are observed in patients taking SKELAXIN. Always tell your doctor or lab personnel about the medicines which you are using.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, always tell your doctor.  SKELAXIN should only be used when benefits overcome risks.
  •  SKELAXIN can impair your thinking so it is advised not to drive or do any work that requires alertness after taking it.
  • If you are taking any other sedative medicine with SKELAXIN then you can feel severe drowsiness. Always tell your doctor about the medicines you are using. Don’t forget to read composition on your cough/cold medicines.
  • Do not take alcohol while you are on a therapy with SKELAXIN. When combined with alcohol can cause severe lack of alertness.
  • Should be used cautiously in children and elderly with the prescriptions of doctor.


Symptoms of over dosage are:

  • nausea, vomiting
  •  diarrhoea
  • Severe drowsiness
  •  Low blood pressure
  •  Fainting
  • Slow breathing

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms.

Treatment of over dosage:

  • Gastric lavage
  • Supportive therapy like artificial respiration and vasopressor agents.


SKELAXIN should be stored at controlled room temperature 15º-30ºC (59º-86ºF). Keep out of the reach of children. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer required.
