Generic Nasonex is a synthetic corticosteroid drug. This medicine is used to reduce the inflammation of the skin. It is also used in the treatment of nasal symptoms of seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis in adults & child of 2 years and above. For individual of age group 18 years or older, generic Nasonex is used for treating nasal polyps. This medicine is also used to treat sinusitis. When combined with an antibiotic, generic Nasonex is used to treat sinusitis that is caused due to bacterial infection.

Generic Nasonex is used for treating eczema, psoriasis, hay fever, asthma, etc. The Nasonex nasal spray is used for 120 times and not beyond that. In case, after 120 spray, if still medicine is present in the bottle, then the bottle should not be used as it might not contain adequate quantity of the medicine. 

It is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck, Essex, Progres laboratories, Perigo, Intas, etc., This medicine is available in the market under various trade names. Merck manufactures this generic medicine as Elocon, Elocom, Elomet, Elosallic, Novasone (as cream or ointment for skin), (Nasonex (as nasal spray for upper respiratory tract) and Asmanex Twisthaler (as dry powder inhaler for lower respiratory tract). Essex manufactures it as Ecural whereas Progres laboratories markets it as mometAid. Furthermore, Perrigo market this medicine as ointment for scalp and Intas as Eziwin. In addition to this, Nasonex is also available as veterinary drug under the brand name of Mometamax for the treatment of otitis externa. The The medicine got approval from FDA in October 1997. 

Generic Nasonex should be stored at room temperature that ranges from 15° to 30°C. When prolonged exposure from direct light should be avoided when removed from the container. It should be kept away from the reach of pet and kid. 

Generic Nasonex contains Mometasone furcate monohydrate as active ingredient. This is chemically designated as 9,21-Dichloro-11β,17-dihydroxy-16α-methylpregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione17-(2 furcate) monohydrate. This white coloured powder has a molecular weight of 539.45 and empirical formula as. It is slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol & isopropanol, soluble in chloroform, acetone, and tetra hydro furan and insoluble in water. The various inactive ingredient present in generic Nasonex include glycerine, microcrystalline cellulose, carboxy methylcellulose sodium, sodium citrate, citric acid, benzalkonium chloride and polysorbate 80. 


Mechanism of action: 

Generic Nasonex works by reducing the inflammation. This is done by reversing the activation of inflammatory proteins and activating the secretion of anti-inflammatory protein,. This in turn stabilises the cell membrane and decreases the influx of inflammatory cells. 



It is used in the treatment of stuffy nose, runny nose, itching and sneezing. 

Side Effects:

The patient might get side effect after using generic Nasonex such as: 

  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Viral infection
  • Bleeding from nose
  • Cough
  • White patches in nose and throat
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weakness
  • Vomiting

Some of the drugs that might with Generic Nasonex are: 

  • Nizoral

  • Xolegel

  • Ketoconazole 



  • To treat allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis for individual of age 12 years and above: 2 sprays in each nostril once in day 
  • To treat individual of age less than 12 years with allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis: one spray in each nostril once in day. 
  • To treat nasal polyps: two sprays in each nostril, once or twice in a day. 


Missed dose: 

In case the patient misses their dose, then they use take it as soon as remember. However, if it’s time for next doses then they should skip that missed dose and take the regular dose. Do not take double dose to make up for the missed one. 



In case of overdose, the patient should contact to their doctor as soon as possible. 



  • Before using generic Nasonex, the patient should tell to the doctor if they are allergic to this medicine. 
  • The medicine contains various inactive ingredients that might also be responsible for causing allergic reactions to the users. Therefore, the patient should always check the entire ingredient properly before using it. 
  • Prior using this medicine, the patient should tell to the doctor if they have any medical history of eye problem, cataract, glaucoma, tuberculosis, herpes eye infection, nose problem, ulcer, surgery, etc. 
  • The patient should avoid being in contact with people who is suffering from chicken pox, measles, etc. 
  • If the patient is taking any prescription or non-prescription drug, or herbal products, then they should tell to the doctor before using this medicine. 
  • Nursing mother and pregnant patient should only use this medicine if suggested by their doctor.
