What is Proctosedyl Ointment?


Proctosedyl ointment is used for the treatment of haemorrhoids or piles. This medication is used by topical administration, which is also beneficial also for the management of some other painful conditions like perianal eczema, anal pruritus (itching) or rectal fissures (tears). This medication works by reducing the swelling, pain and muscle spasm in the patients suffering from piles as well as rectal lesions. Proctosedyle ointment is available in the form in yellowish-white and odourless translucent greasy paste, which comes at the strength of 15g and 30g tubes.

How does Proctosedyl Ointment work?

Since this medication contains two medications, so it exhibits anasthetic and antispasm properties. That is why Proctosedyl is a good choice of Hemorrhoids. The active ingredient is Cinchocaine, and it is a potent local anaesthetic as well as analgesic (pain reliever). It has also the ability to relax the spasm of anal sphincter.

Another ingredient is Hydrocortisone and it has an anti-inflammatory properties which relieve the inflammation, itching and also decreases discharge. So this combination therapy works wonderfully in the management of Hemprrhoids reducing the swelling, itching as well as numbing the pain associated with Hemorrhoids and some rectal lesions.

What are the ingredients of Proctosedyl ointment?

The active ingredient of this medication:

  • Cinchocaine hydrochloride 5 mg
  • Hydrocortisone BP 5mg

The inactive Ingredients:

  • Liquid paraffin
  • White soft paraffin
  • Wool fat

What are the indications of Proctosedyl ointment?

This medication can be indicated in the following conditions:

  • To relief the symptoms of internal haemorrhoids, perianal eczema, anal fissure and anal pruritus.
  • Pre and post-operative management of Haemorrhoid surgeries.
  • Some rectal lesions.

What are the drug interactions of Proctosedyl ointment?

This medication can interact with the following drugs such as,

  • Over-counter-drugs (OTC)
  • Any herbal product.
  • You should also avoid caffeine, alcohol or nicotine from cigarettes. These can alter the effects of the medication.
  • Some street drugs.

What are the contraindications of the Proctosedyl ointment?

This medication is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • In hypersensitivity to chioncocain hydrochloride or hydrocortisone.
  • Children of the age of 12 years or under 12 years.
  • In fungal infections.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • It cannot be used for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.

What are the side effects of Proctosedyl ointment?

  • Burning sensation of the skin
  • Skin rashes

Side effects on chronic use:

  • Adrenal suppression.
  • Decreases the concentration of corticosteroid hormones by adrenal gland.

How long should you use Proctosedyl?

It is recommended to use this medication for 7 days or according to the prescription of your physician. If the condition is demanding for longer use, decrease the number of applications to 2-3 times in a day. You should not increase the duration more than 3 weeks. Always consult with your doctor before using the medication to avoid the unwanted complications.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you recall it. But avoid the dose near the time of next dose. Do not take a double dose.

How should you store Proctosedyl Ointment?

Always store this medication below the temperature of 30 degree C. Protect the medication from heat and light. Keep the medication out of the touch of children.

How should you use this medication?

Apply this medication on the lesion thrice in a day, after bowel motion. Gently rub the area. If you need to apply deeper, take the ointment with the nozzle and insert itto the rectum and squeeze the ointment. Use this medication atleast 7 days or as per your doctor’s advice.

What are the precautions?

  • Always avoid long-term therapy of this medication, because it can cause retardation in growth and suppression of adrenocortical gland.
  • Duration of the treatment should be exceeded more than 7 days.
  • Do not use this medication in all types of infections.
  • Proctosedyl ointment should not be prescribed in pregnancy because it can cause developmental anomaly of the unborn baby.
  • Chronic use of this medication can lead to topical atropy of skin and superficial vascular dilation.
  • This medication can cause contact dermatitis (skin reaction).
