Prometrium is used for the expansion of uterus lining in case of postmenopausal women who is under the treatment of estrogen hormone replacement therapy. You should not share your medicine with other person who also needs it for similar purpose. It might lead to side effects and other health related problems in them due to differences in the immune system.

Dosage:

 The dose of the medicine depends on the type of condition it is being used.

 For preventing endometrial hyperplasia, you should take 200 mg Prometrium once in a day at bedtime for twelve days per 28 days of menstrual cycle.

 For the treatment of secondary amenorrhoea, you should take 400 mg Prometrium orally once in day for 10 days.

 Missed dose:

 In case you miss any of the doses, take it as soon as you remember about it. However, if it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and take the regular scheduled dose. Do not double the dose for making up the missed one.

 Overdose:

 In case overdose of the medicine is suspected, you should consult your doctor as immediately as possible.

Precautions:

  •  Before taking Prometrium, tell your doctor in case you are allergic to this medicine or any other medicine of same class.
  •  Prometrium contains various inactive ingredients that might also cause allergic reactions. Therefore, it is suggested to check entire ingredient before taking the medicine.
  •  In case you are planning to become pregnant or already pregnant, then take the medicine only if your doctor has recommended for it.

Prometrium is highly demanded for starting menstrual cycle in those women whose periods are irregular due to the deficiency of progesterone in the body. It belongs to the class of medicine known as progestin. The medicine is appreciated for using in the mixture of post-menopausal estrogen replacement therapy. This is mainly done to stop the action of estrogen from thickening the lining of the uterus, a process known as endometrial hyperplasia. This is turn help in reducing the risk of endometrial cancer.

 The oval shaped capsule of Prometrium is yellow in colour. It should be stored at room temperature that ranges from 15-30 degree centigrade. The medicine should be protected from light, heat and moisture. It should be kept in such a place where children and pets should not reach, preferably in a closed and locked cupboard. Always check the expiry date of the medicine before using it. In case it is expired, discard it properly with the help of local companies that are engaged in such activities. FDA  has approved this medicine in May 1998.

 Prometrium is available in different strengths such as 100 mg, 200 mg, etc. The various inactive ingredients present in the 100 mg are FD &C Red No.40, lecithin NF, gelatine NF, glycerine, peanut oil NF, D&C Yellow No.10, titanium dioxide, etc. in contrast to this, 200 mg capsules contains FD &C Yellow No. 6, titanium dioxide, D&C Yellow No. 10, peanut oil NF, gelatine NF, lecithin NF, glycerine, etc.

 Mechanism of action:

 Prometrium works by developing the mammary glands and thus changes the endometrium. This endometrium is found in the lining of the uterus and relaxes the smooth muscles of uterine. Ultimately, it blocks the ovulation within the ovaries, maintains pregnancy.

 Indication:

 Prometrium is used for preventing the endometrial enlargement in postmenopausal women who has not undergone the process of hysterectomy and also receiving conjugated estrogen on daily basis. It is often used to treat secondary amenorrhea, a condition where menstrual periods is missing.

 Drug Interactions:

 Prometrium might interact with some of the drugs and can change the final result. Some of the drugs that might interact with this medicine are:

  •  Bromocriptine
  • Ketoconazole
  • Clarithromycin
  • Erythromycin
  • Rifamycin
  • Cyclosporine

 This is not the complete list of drug interaction. Some other drugs might also interact with this medicine. Therefore, always share with your doctor about all the medicines that you are taking.
