Soriatane belongs to second generation retinoids. This oral medication is used for treating psoriasis and several other skin related problems. The medicine gets quickly absorbed in body and distributed after oral administration. It may take 2 to 4 week time to show benefits. What is Soriatane?

Soriatane (Acitretin) is a retinoid, which is a form of vitamin A. This medication is intended to provide relief from severe psoriasis disease in adults. However, patient should know that Acitretin doesn’t cure the disease of psoriasis, and patient may relapse following the discontinuation of treatment with this medication. This treatment may be used for treating other health issues as well. Your doctor can guide you better. 

What are the critical important associated with Soriatane safe use?

  • This is a critical treatment which should be used after consulting a doctor.
  • During medication or after having medication with Soriatane, patient should not donate blood for at least 3 years. If this kind of donated blood is inserted to a pregnant woman and it could cause birth defects in the baby.
  • In females Soriatane treatment is suggested only after patient agrees to use effective contraceptive to avoid pregnancy. In some cases patient is recommended to undergo pregnancy test as well.
  • During treatment and after 2 months of discontinuation of treatment with Soriatane, patient should not consume alcohol.


What are the points that I should discuss with doctor at the time of consultation about Soriatane?

Inform your doctor

  • if you have any allergies, especially any content of this medication
  • severe liver or kidney disease
  • high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat) in your blood
  • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding

Be alert to notify your current medications also, especially if you are taking:

  • methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall)
  • a tetracycline antibiotics such as demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline and others.


What are the instructions for use?

  • Take exact medication as per your prescription
  • Never adjust your dosages unless you are advised to do so by your doctor
  • Tag along to the directions on your prescription label for the whole duration of treatment
  • This oral medication can be used with a glass of water after meals.
  • Your symptoms may possibly get worse in the initial days of therapy. For desired results, continue treatment as per instructions and if you find anything confusing, contact your doctor.
  • If your symptoms do not improve following one course of medication, consult your doctor.
  • Your doctor may recommend you frequent blood tests to be sure that this medication is not causing any harmful effects on your health.


What I should do in case of missing a dose of Soriatane?

You can take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time of next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your dose from next schedule. Taking extra medicine to make up for the missed dose is not recommended.

What can happen if someone has taken overdose of Soriatane?

In case of overdose patient may report symptoms such as headache, dizziness or spinning sensation, and nausea or vomiting.

In such condition emergency health services should be consulted immediately. 

What are the possible side effects associated with Soriatane?

In case of allergic reaction to Soriatane patient may experience hives, difficulty breathing, swelling on face, lips, tongue, or throat.

If you experience these side effects, stop using Soriatane and go for medical help:

  • blurred vision
  • headache or pain behind your eyes
  • nausea and vomiting
  • sudden decrease in night vision
  • depressed mood
  • aggression
  • unusual thoughts or behavior
  • thoughts of self harm
  • jaundice 

What should I avoid while taking Soriatane?

  • Do not donate blood during treatment with Soriatane after discontinuing treatment for at least 3 years. Donated blood may be inserted in pregnant woman and could cause birth defects in fetus.
  • Do not use vitamin supplements that contain vitamin A during treatment. Soriatane is a form of vitamin A and having extra doses can cause adverse reaction similar to overdose.
  • Avoid extended exposure to sun or tanning beds as this medication can make you more sensitive to sun and patient can easily get sunburn symptoms. Using sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) will also be helpful.
  • This medication may affect vision, especially at night. Hence, be cautious while doing driving or any activity that requires clear sight.
