Suprax that contains cefixime is an antibiotic that is used in the treatment of the bacterial infections. It comes under the category of cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts to stop the bacteria from surviving.  This medicine is used only for bacterial infections. This drug is used to treat bacterial infections like otitis, sinutitis, tonsillitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), etc.

DOSAGE OF SUPRAX:

Suprax 100 mg is available in a tablet dosage form. This medication is usually taken once in a day with or without food. Suprax is advised to take the drug once or twice in a day. This dosage depends on the medical condition of the patient and response to the treatment. Also dosage depends on the weight of the children. Take the drug until your full prescribed course even if symptoms have disappeared.

Side Effects

SIDE-EFFECT OF SUPRAX 100 mg:

Most common side effects of Suprax 100 mg are abdominal pain, diarrhea, acidity, stomach upset, dizziness, nausea or vomiting may occur. Some rare side effects are severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting or nausea, yellowing of skin or eyes, dark color urination, some new infections like sore throat or fever can be seen, bleeding, mood changes, etc. Repeated use or prolong use of cefixime may result in oral thrush or fungal infections.  Allergic reactions include itching, rashes, trouble in breathing or swelling of face, throat, or lips.

PRECAUTIONS:

Some precautions should be taken if you are on the medication of Suprax-

  • If you are allergic to penicillin or some other cephalosporin then take proper precautions while using suprax.
  • Complete your full course of treatment for effective result and to prevent the onset of action of bacterial infections.
  • If the patient has a medical history of kidney disease, intestinal disease, then consult your doctor.
  • In pregnancy this medicine is used only when they really needed that too with full precautions.
  • If you are using hormonal contraceptives then take some other birth control methods as it may affect the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.
  • If you have symptoms like g.i.t. upset, abdominal pain or cramping, persistent diarrhea with or without blood in the stool then do not take anti-diarrheal medicines or narcotic pain relieving drug.
  • Suprax is not useful in common cold or flu. Unnecessary use of antibiotics can result in decreased effect of the antibiotic.
  • Do not take Antacid (drugs that are used to get relief from acidity) one hour before or after taking Suprax 100 mg.

Cefixime is a main active constituent of the Suprax which is a semisynthetic cephalosporin. It is used orally. The mechanism of action for antibacterial effect of cefixime is to interfere with the synthesis of cell wall. The Suprax get binds to the penicillin binding protein which is involved in the last step of bacterial cell wall synthesis.  The last step of transpeptidation in peptidoglycan synthesis in cell wall bio-synthesis is interrupted. As the cell wall synthesis is interrupted the bacteria cell will get die.

USES OF SUPRAX 100 MG:

Cefixime is used in the treatment of bacterial infections like- sore throat, otitis (infections of the ear), tonsillitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs), gonorrhea, chronic obstructive, pulmonary disease (COPD), laryngitis, bronchitis and also for typhoid fever.

STORAGE CONDITION OF SUPAX:

Store the drug at room temperature (25-30 0C).protect the drug from heat, light and moisture. Keep the drug away from the reach of children and pets.

INTERACTIONS OF SUPRAX:

Cefixime may show interactions some interactions if used with certain medicines.  These are-

  • Drugs given for blood thinning like Warfarin
  • Live bacterial vaccines
  • Probenecid drug
  • Cefixime do not interact with hormonal contraceptives but may reduce their effect.

IN CASE OF MISSED DOSE OF SUPRAX:

Strictly follow your doses. If you have missed a dose then take it as soon as you get remembered. But if it the time for the next dose then skip it and continue with regular dose.

IN CASE OF OVERDOSE OF SUPRAX:

Symptoms of overdosing of Suprax include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea. In case of overdose visit your nearest clinic center and consult with your doctor.
