Symbicort Inhalation 

Symbicort is drug which is having combination of budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide is a steroid that diminishes the inflammation in the body. Formoterol is a drug that helps in bronchodilation that relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Symbicort is used to counteract the bronchospasm in individuals suffering from asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 

How does Drug Work? 

Symbicort inhalation contains Budesonide which is a Corticosteroid; shown to have inhibitory activities on multiple cell and mediators participating in allergic and non allergic mediated inflammation. Second drug which is present in symbicort inhalation is Formoterol which helps to make happen relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of release of intermediaries of instant hypersensitivity from various cells, particularly mast cells. 

What is the Dosage of Symbicort inhalation? 

Particular asthma scheme plan is given to patient by Doctor/Pharmacist to control or for the management of Asthma.                                      

  • Dose for Adults/ Adolescent - starting dosage of this nasal spray in adults 2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening, approximately 12 hours apart). 
  •  Dose for Children (4 Years of Age and Older) - 1 inhalation twice daily. 
  • DO NOT use more of this medicine or always consult your physician advises before taking it. 

Directions for Use: Patient’s instructions for proper use of Symbicort inhalation along with every package Of Symbicort inhalation. 

What form does Symbicort inhalation come in?

Symbicort is offered in 2 dosages forms.

  • Symbicort 100 inhalation - Each dry powder of symbicort inhaler contains: budesonide 100 µg and formoterol fumarate dihydrate 6 µg per dose. It also contains lactose which acts as a "carrier."
  • Symbicort 200 inhalation - Each dry powder of symbicort inhaler contains: budesonide 200 µg and formoterol fumarate dihydrate 6 µg per dose. 

How to use your symbicort inhalation? 

Just go through the complete instructions written on carton carefully and use only as directed. 

Before using the symbicort inhalation

  •  Shake the bottle of nasal spray gently for 5 minutes and then take off the dust cover.
  •  It is very important to prime the pump of inhalation into the air when you have not used it for so long. 

While Using the Spray 

  • Blow out your nose to clean your nostrils.
  • Close one nostril with one finger. Incline your head up slightly and, kept the bottle in erected condition, carefully insert the nasal through applicator into the second nostril.
  • Start to take breathe in through your nose, and WHILE BREATHING IN press smoothly and quickly down once on the applicator to release the spray into your nose.
  •  Then breathe out through your mouth.
  • If a second spray is needed in that nostril, repeat the step. 


What are the indications of symbicort inhalation? 

 It is used as an Intranasal to manage symptoms of asthma in patients of 12 years and older  (inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose). It is not indicated to patients having acute bronchospasm. 

What are the Contraindications of symbicort inhalation? 

Symbicort inhalation is contraindicated in patients, who are hypersensitive to this inhalation.

Ask your Physician/pharmacist earlier than taking this medicine, if you have following medical history:

  • Thyroid problems.
  • Diabetes problem
  • Heart problems
  • Liver problems 

What are the major/minor Side Effects of symbicort inhalation? 

Ask your doctor/pharmacist at once if you have any of these major side effects: 

  • Cough problems
  • Sores of throat that won’t heal.
  • Irritation of tongue and mouth. 

Less serious of these side effects may include: 

  • Rashes in skin.
  • Headache.
  • Weight gain.
  • Difficulty in sleeping.
  • Tiredness.

What are the Drug Interactions of symbicort inhalation? 

Medications are known to interact with symbicort are listed below:

  • Carvedilol.
  • Dorzolamide.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide.
  • Levatol.

What are the storage conditions of symbicort inhalation? 

Storage conditions of symbicort inhalation are: 

  • Stay children away from symbicort inhalation.
  • Avoid this spraying in eyes; it may cause vision problems in patients.
  • Storage temperature should be 30°C
  • Stop using your symbicort inhalation after its expiry date shown as “EXP” on the label or box.
  • Store the inhalation by keeping mouth piece down. 

REMEMBER: This medicine has been prescribed for you by your doctor. DO NOT give this medicine to anyone without prescription. 


In some circumstances, this medicine may not be appropriate and your doctor may wish to give you a Different medicine. Make it clear sure that your doctor is aware about your medical history. 

What should be done in case of Missed Dose?

 If some person has missed a dose, have it as soon as recall. If it is closer the time of the next dose, don’t take the missed dose and resume the usual dosing schedule. Need not to take more dose than prescribed dose. 

What should be done in case of Over Dose? 

If some person has overdosed with symbicort inhalation, make a call to poison control center or emergency room quickly.
