Tetracycline is an antibacterial drug that is marketed as Hostacycline. Tetracycline antibiotic fights the bacteria and used to treat various infections that are caused by the bacteria. These infections are urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chest infections, skin infections, mouth infections, etc.

DOSAGE OF TETRACYCLINE:

Hostacycline is available in capsule 250 mg dosage form. For an acute infection take 3 to 4 doses in a day while for treating acne it is recommended to take 1 or 2 doses. It is recommended to take the drug with an empty stomach means one hour before food or two hours after taking food.

SIDE-EFFECT OF TETRACYCLINE 250 mg:

Most common side effects of tetracycline are nausea, vomiting, sore throat, faint, pain in the head, loss of desire to eat, rectal discomfort, etc. Some rare but serious side effects are increased sunlight sensitivity of skin, difficulty in swallowing, discoloration of teeth to brown or grey, decreased capacity of hearing or ringing sounds in the ear, numbness of hand or feet, pain in stomach, yellowing of skin, eyes or urine takes place.

Precautions that should be taken before or after using this medicine are-

  • If you are allergic or hypersensitive to tetracycline or any other ingredients of this drug then consult with your doctor.
  • If kidney or hepatic related issue consult your doctor.
  • If you are taking any herbal drugs then consult your doctor.
  • If tetracycline is used in pregnancy or in children under 12 years of age it can cause permanent staining of teeth.
  • Tetracycline may cause skin to become sunlight sensitive. Use good sunscreen or cloth for covering your body while going outside.
  • Do not take any medication of tetracycline during bedtime or just before getting lying.

Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that acts as an antibacterial drug. Tetracycline works to inhibit the synthesis of protein in the bacteria body. Mainly it binds to the 30S ribosome and interrupts at the translation step of the protein synthesis process. However tetracycline is not used for viral infections like flu and the common cold. Besides treating bacterial infections tetracycline is also used for certain stomach ulcers along with the combination with anti-ulcer medicines.

USES OF TETRACYCLINE 250 mg:

Tetracycline is used to treat various types of infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and skin infections. Other diseases are chancroid (sexual transmitted disease), cholera, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, anthrax, acne, syphilis and Malta fever (brucellosis). Along with combination with other drug it is used in the treatment of ulcers and inflammations of the stomach and intestine that are caused by the infections of Helicobacter pylori. 

STORAGE CONDITIONS FOR TETRACYCLINES:

Keep the drug at room temperature (25- 300 C). Store the drugs out of the reach of the children. Keep the drug at cool and dry, away from direct heat and light.

INTERACTIONS OF TETRACYCLINE:

Some drugs that can show interactions when used simultaneously are-

  • Penicillin
  • Anticoagulant i.e. blood thinning drugs like Warfarin
  • Antacid and iron containing products because antacids contain elements like calcium, aluminium, etc. and iron products can interfere with their absorption in the body.
  • If taken with oral contraceptives, effectiveness of contraceptive decreases.
  • Strontium, methoxyflurane, digoxin

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF TETRACYCLINE:

  • Do not take this drug if you are pregnant or a nursing mother.
  • Do not give this medicine to children less than 12 years of age.
  • Tetracycline should not be given if you are suffering from lupus (an inflammatory condition) or myasthenia gravis (a condition in which muscle gets weak) because it may result in worse condition.

IN CASE OF MISSED DOSE OF TETRACYCLINE:

Follow your dose regimen strictly. If you have missed a dose then take it as soon as you get remembered. If it is the time for the next dose then omit it and continue with your regular doses.

IN CASE OF OVERDOSE OF TETRACYCLINE:

Do not increase or decrease your doses with your own. In case of overdosing, visit your nearest hospital or consult with your doctor.
