ULTRAM (Tramadol) is an analgesic, also called pain killer which is used to relieve pain which moderate to severe in intensity. It is also used to manage neuropathic pain and tender muscles. So ULTRAM is one of the best prescribed drugs for pain. It is used when other medication does not work in relieving pain. Consult with your doctor if you notice any problem in breathing while using this medication and changing the dose of this medication.

WHAT IS THE DOSAGE OF ULTRAM ?

For patients with moderate to severe pain ULTRAM (tramadol) should be started with a dose of 25 mg/day. Separate doses of 25 mg are to be given for 3 days to reach 100 mg/day (25 mg four times a day). After that the total daily dose may be increased by 50 mg as tolerated every 3 days to reach 200 mg/day (50 mg four times a day). After titration, ULTRAM (tramadol) 50 to 100 mg can be given every 4 to 6 hours but should not exceed 400 mg/day.

For patients who require quick analgesic effect, ULTRAM (tramadol) 50 mg to 100 mg can be given for every four to six hours. Do not use more than 400 mg a day.

HOW TO TAKE ULTRAM 100 MG?

Follow the instructions of doctor for using ULTRAM. Do not take in amounts than prescribed one. Take it with a glass of water. Do not break an extended release ULTRAM ER tablet. Swallow the tablet whole to prevent exposure to a potentially fatal dose. Never crush or break an ULTRAM tablet to inhale the powder or mix it into a liquid to inject the drug into your vein. It can result in death. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine. It can lead to over dosage and poisoning.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ULTRAM 100 MG?

Common side effects are:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness, feeling of tired
  • Constipation, diarrhoea

Rare but serious side effects are:

  • Allergic reaction: difficulty in breathing, swelling of lips/face/throat, rashes.
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • Fever, fast heart rate
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of coordination, fainting
  • Skin reaction--fever, sore throat, swelling of face/tongue, burning and itching of eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash, blistering and peeling of skin.
  • Stomach pain
  • Nervousness or anxiety.
  • Itching, sweating and flushing  

WHAT ARE THE CONTRAINDICATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS OF ULTRAM 100MG ?

Tell your physician in case you have any of the following:

  • Allergy to ULTRAM or any other allergy.
  • Asthma
  • Problems related to kidney and/or liver function
  • Any mood disorder like confusion, depression
  • History of heart disease or stroke.
  • Difficulty in urination due to enlarged prostate
  • Disease of pancreas
  • Pregnancy, can lead to serious consequences in unborn child.
  • Breast feeding, ULTRAM passes through breast milk.
  • If you are using ULTRAM along with other drugs like muscle relaxants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, or drugs for seizures tell your doctor.
  • Do not use ULTRAM in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed because it can affect your breathing. Tell your doctor if you are not getting any benefit from ULTRAM.
  • Do not stop using ULTRAM suddenly, or you have to face withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using ULTRAM.
  • ULTRAM cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after having it.
  • Do not combine it with alcohol because it will lead to serious consequences.
  • ULTRAM causes addiction so do not use without guidance of doctor.
  • This medicine cannot be given to anyone under 16 years of age without doctor’s permission.

WHAT ARE THE DRUG INTERACTIONS OF ULTRAM ?        

ULTRAM interact with following drugs:

  • Fluoxetine, paroxetine and amitriptyline
  • Serotonergic Drugs MAOIs
  • linezolid (an antibiotic which is a reversible non-selective MAOI)
  • lithium
  • St. John's Wart.
  • Carbamazepine
  • Quinidine
  • ketoconazole
  • Erythromycin
  • Triptans
  • Rifampin
  • Cimetidine
  • Digoxin
  • Warfarin

There are many other drugs which can interact with ULTRAM. So, before starting the therapy tell your doctor each and every detail of the drugs which you are using concomitantly.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF OVERDOSE OF TRAMADOL ?

Consult with your doctor immediately if you take an overdose of this medication. You may catch the symptoms of overdose like breadycardia or slow heart rate, difficulty in breathing, drowsiness, Syncope (fainting), cold and clammy skin.

WHAT ARE THE STORAGE CONDITIONS?

You should keep this medication in a cool and dry place at room temperature, away from the reach of children.
