Xanax is benzodiazepines which are central nervous system (CNS) depressants that act by enhancing the effect of neurotransmitters GABA (Gamma-amino butyric acid). Xanax is used for the treatment of anxiety, anxiety caused by depression and panic disorder. Xanax is an orally administered medication available in tablet form. The active ingredient of Xanax is alprazolam which belongs to the family of benzodiazepines. It acts by gradually decreasing the movement of chemicals in the brain or central nervous system and becomes unbalanced. This leads to the reduced nervous tension.  It acts by decreasing abnormal excitement in the central nervous system. Alprazolam acts by enhancing the action of GABA in the CNS. GABA is a neurotransmitter that blocks the activity of the brain, because the extraordinary activity in the brain may lead to anxiety or other psychiatric disorder. It is the fastest acting drug.

Indication:

Drug interactions:

  • HIV drugs like Delavirdine, Indinavir.

  • Antihistamines like diphenhydramine.
  • Muscle relaxants like codeine.
  •  Psychiatric drugs like chlorpromazine, risperidone.

Contraindication:

Contraindication is a situation in which use of a particular drug is prohibited. The alprazolam is contraindicated if

  • The patient is sensitive to alprazolam, benzodiazepine or other ingredients of the drug.
  • The patients with open angle glaucoma mainly acute narrow angle glaucoma. 

Overdose:

An overdose of a drug can cause serious side effect or may be fatal. Symptoms of the overdose are drowsiness, confusion, muscle weakness, impaired balance, coma and fainting. If by chance you have taken the over seek immediate medical help.

Missed dose:

Always remember your schedule of medicine. If by chance you miss a dose take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But skip the missed dose if it’s the almost time to next dose and continue the regular schedule. Do not take the double dose or extra dose to compensate the missed dose.
